The Foundation OGBS’s funding comes entirely from donations made by our member donors and one-time donations. That is why we rely on your support to continue our fight against GBS infection and to achieve our objectives.
In February 2025, we celebrated the 25-year anniversary of Foundation OGBS. An extraordinary fact we’re extremely proud of. Especially as we, thanks to our donors, have been able to achieve a lot over the years. Greater awareness of the disease, its diagnosis and consequences within the medical community, an updated medical guideline, providing information to those affected through multimedia presentations, support for research, and much more.
Despite these efforts, we are still receiving messages from parents who have had to deal with this infectious disease in newborns and its consequences. Unfortunately, our aim for the prevention of the infection and its lingering effects has not yet been achieved and requires further commitment and your support.

Guideline
Foundation OGBS contributed to the realisation of the guideline ‘Prevention and treatment of early-onset neonatal infections (adaptation of the NICE guideline)’ April 2017.
Exhibition attendance
Every year, we try to staff at least one exhibition to raise awareness of the risk of GBS infection. We have noticed that this has been fruitful in recent years among healthcare professionals such as maternity nurses, nurses, and doctors.
Website makeover
Over the past few years, we have been actively improving our website and have recently given it a complete makeover. The website is regularly visited and is an important source of information for parents and healthcare professionals. We also actively respond to questions sent to us by email.
GBS awareness
- The topic of GBS has become a standard part of the maternity nursing training programme, with the DVD we produced being used as a teaching aid.
- Jeannette Rietberg has written a handbook on pregnancy following the loss of a baby, in collaboration with gynaecologist Dr Maria Pel. Jeannette was a member of the Foundation OGBS board. The book is called: ‘Always one child short’.
- The latest NHG (Dutch College of General Practitioners) guideline on urinary tract infections specifically addresses GBS infection in pregnant women and how to manage it.
Research
- In 2010, a study was launched to find a cost-effective way of preventing neonatal infection caused by GBS.
- Research into a GBS rapid test to detect the presence of GBS bacteria at the time of delivery. A standard culture usually takes much longer than this rapid test. Research on the improvement and implementation of this test is ongoing.
